Collections of Natural Sciences

Collecting and stone working in the area of Nová Paka have been known since the half of 14th century - the age of Charles IV. The bases of our collections were made from private and scholar exhibits. First exhibition of natural collections was found by the government in 1908; new building of Treasury of Gem Stones was opened in May 1996.

Paleontological collection contains mostly fossils of Permo-carboniferous age, at the first place many famous silicified wood of fossil trees. Except these giant and beautiful stems there are many fossil remnants of Permian fishes, amphibians and Cretaceous bivalves.

Mineralogical collection contains several thousand minerals from the Nová Paka region. They are product of Permian volcanic activity and are found in basaltic rocks – melaphyres. Most of them are polished, very old and unique.
